It was a sunny day, the day that we celebrated a life at the golf club. The family had chosen the club as the place their loved one was happiest. The golf course radiated in the sunshine, and everyone had a smile on their faces: the golfers, the staff, the guests - everyone. Guests enjoyed drinks on the terrace before the ceremony, enjoying the balmy breeze and appreciating the view. This was the perfect setting for a truly special occasion – a celebration of life.
A Time and a Place
I was so glad the family had chosen to celebrate the life of their loved one away from a crematorium. They had chosen a direct cremation, where the deceased's body goes directly to a crematorium, and they then receive the ashes in a presentation box or urn. So the family approached me, knowing that they wanted to celebrate the deceased's life in a happy place, a place that meant something to the whole family, and where there were treasured memories. I fully support this approach and I helped them to navigate the delicate balance between grief and celebration. No one wants to say goodbye, but if you have to why not do it where you are happy, and can appreciate the joy of your memories.
Honoring Endings and New Beginnings
We worked together to bring to life the deceased's life, with tributes from friends old and new, and heartfelt stories from his family. The ceremony itself was a delicate balance of solemn reflection and heartfelt laughter, as we shared stories and memories that filled the air with warmth and love.
A Personal Touch
With so many guests there to honour a life well lived, it was going to be difficult for the family to talk to everyone. So I suggested that we have cards available for guests to write down their best memories of this special man. The box filled up with memories, some the family knew, some that were new to them. Each card carried a message of love and remembrance, full of fitting tributes to a man who had touched so many lives.
Celebrating Life in the Midst of Loss
The last tribute was from his daughter, a poignant bittersweet message that life needs to be lived today. She spoke of 'the last day', when her father was ill and you never knew if each event would be the last one. The message was clear: we should live for today, embrace life and live with peace. It was a message of healing and reflection, a reminder that even in the face of loss, there is still beauty to be found in the world.
The Power of Celebration
As I look back on that ceremony, I am reminded of the transformative power of celebration. In honoring this man's life in this beautiful location, surrounded by people who love each other and loved him, I found a sense of belonging, as if I had been temporarily adopted by this family, so close we had become in the process of celebration. The ceremony was not an end but a beginning – a new chapter in the story of their family, marked by love, loss, and the enduring power of memory.
In this moment, surrounded by the echoes of laughter and the whispers of love, I am reminded that the bonds of family are unbreakable, and that even in our darkest moments, there is light to be found.
In the embrace of celebration and remembrance, this family found a place where they could honor the past while embracing the future. It is a destination that will forever hold a special place in their hearts, a reminder of the enduring power of love and the beauty of life itself.
